"For a portrait of a child, especially a young girl,
this is possibly rather an unconventional
portrait, as the sitter is quite obviously not in the
least bit timid or uncomfortable. It was this
aspect of the child that appealed most to me, as
she is a highly intelligent and curious girl,
completely confident and at ease.

She is a talented girl and a natural performer,
and this I think makes her an

interesting sitter. It is unusual for a child to hold
such a steady gaze, and it was that unflinching
aspect that I found quite fun to paint!"
